I was raised, along with my five siblings, by a single mother after my father passed away when I was one year old. My mother worked tirelessly, but there was a year when she couldn’t afford my high school tuition fee. A young woman—who was also a student—paid the $200 cost for me. That moment changed my entire life. I promised myself that one day I would pay it forward. When I was accepted to Brown University, I founded SAGE to honor that promise and create opportunities for girls who, like me, just need someone to believe in them. I strongly believe that each of us can make a difference in someone’s life. You don’t need to be wealthy to help others—sometimes kindness alone can change someone’s future. If that young woman hadn’t helped me, I would not be where I am today.
